I sent my V5C to the DVLA having entered the word motor caravan in the body type ammendment box,
The new document came back a week later, no covering letter or demand to present the vehicle for inspection?
So it seems you can simply ammend all the details you need and they will send you a new one.

Lucky you I sent my V5C on 28th Jan (with Motor Caravan already on it) to DVLA changing the MAM and number of seats (after the previously mentioned emails from DVLA on this very subject) and got it back Tuesday saying they can't do it as it would affect the revenue on the vehicle ;D The V160 they sent to me stated that if I had already registered the vehicle I should send details together with the V5C (AGAIN) and they would investigate further If the lady had spent a minute to check that I already had registered the vehicle she would have realised I did not want to pay less to keep George on the road I get the feeling that either they don't talk to each other at DVLA, or my name / VRN has been flagged as one to be hassled on each and every occassion Makes you want to express your views on the performance of the DVLA staff but I don't think that would be a advisable as they would probably increase the hassle facter by 10 Will post results of outcome - hopefully sometime soon PS....The all-up weight is now well under 7500KG and there just isn't the room for the 46 seats now (altered by DVLA Edinburgh at registration - not noticed by DVLA Swansea) And, if anyone from DVLA is reading this forum I honestly think you are all doing a wonderful job As I said Jonathan - Lucky you !!

jim thats exactly what happened to me when i sent my logbook off to get motorcaravan put on mine. after about 4-5 weeks i got nothing back so i phoned them up, the guy at swansea said i couldnt change it until it was ready to be taxed as a motorhome, then they may want to do an inspection to ensure it meets their criteria of a motorhome.

That might be the key here, mine was already taxed PLG so there would be no revenue issue? I was at DVLA sighthill 2 years ago to have the tax class changed, I didnt take the vehicle, just went in and spoke to them.

Del Boy: The V5C I sent was already Motor Caravan & Private HGV, all I wanted was for them to rectify their mistake with the number of seats, and change the MAM just to keep it all legal/in line with driving licence. The tax on it was already £165 and I wasn't looking to change that, but they still sent the bliddy thing back. Jonathan: The guy at Sighthill said they had a lot of problems with folk trying to register a coach/bus as a motor caravan then use it as a parcel delivery vehicle - a lot of them failed to turn up when asked to bring the vehicle for inspection. You were lucky it was already PLG when you went to tax The Dragon. If they send back the V5C in its original state then I am leaving it at that and just carry a copy of it with all the correspondance in case I get stopped by DOT or the Polis - they can sort it out amongst themselves and let me know what they think. I know this comment should be in the licence bit, but is part of the same problem. As far as I am concerned, my licence allows me to drive any bus 9-16 seats NOT for hire or reward and tow a trailer in excess of 750KG. Regards.

Eureka Just got the V5C back from DVLA and they have managed to change the "Revenue Weight" to 7500Kg .... BUT .... despite sending a "nice" letter with it they still enter "46" in the number of seats. How the hell can anyone convert a 46-seater coach to a motor caravan and still fit 46 seats ?? Perhaps they think I have welded them to the roof Freda said it must be a man who dealt with it as a woman can concentrate on more than one thing at a time. Time to drop them another email (with pics ?) and ask what now? - can't drive round breaking the law can we ?? The saga continues - will keep you posted regards, Jim They even had the nerve to send me the booklet which clearly states that, by law, I must notify them of any changes to the vehicle - what the hell do they think I have just done

Jim,
Write the number of seats you need in the box, sign the form and send it with nothing else to the DVLA.
Don't confuse them with covering letters, they will open the envelope, change the seating and send it back to you.
{hopefully? Thats what I've done with all of my vehicles so far and it worked}

It's official - George is now registered as a "Motor Caravan - 7500KG Gross - Private HGV (?) - 7 Seater". Lesson learned ...... do not send a covering letter, just send the V5C 4 times changing 1 thing each time so they don't get confused. I double-checked with Adrian Flux regarding the upgrade from 3 to 7 seats - no change to policy or premium providing I don't use it as a people carrier Technically, any vehicle carrying more than 1 PERSON has to be a people carrier as 2 persons are "people". Must look that one up. Better write the obligitary letter to AF now (as instructed) to inform them of the changes. I will post some more pics on my website shortly to show the new layout. Regards.

Hi all Will be MOT'ing next week if all goes to plan (so thats a probably not then ) Jonathan fancy having PLG on a private HGV after all you've said and your brother being polis as well ;D The DVLA chap said I could hand in the V5 there and then but it would be easier If I MOT'd called round the DVLA on the way back to TAX I Think their car park would struggle to be honest (or more accurately I would struggle in their car park)

Hi Jim
The local office said too call in on way back from MOT and get the tax Disc at same time as changing docs over, that way you areon the road and then if the head sheds want it examined they came let you know and arrange, but it is not keeping you off road while you wait.
George
PS work as gone mad this week no time to ring for MOT and get it in.
