Hi, i'm offering my services to anyone in the south west, preferably N Devon who is currently converting a bus. I know nothing, have zero experience but i'm a grafter and know how to work a kettle. I'm currently a service bus driver so at least have a licence!
My ultimate aim is to convert a decker for a boondocking live aboard, just looking for some hands on experience with the practicalities.

Greetings I am Dave McHendry the operations manager for the Stephen Harrison Snooker Academy. We are a not for profit social enterprise that puts on free snooker and mentoring sessions for disadvantaged groups. There is a video about what we do www.youtube.com/watch?v=zHr6j4ryqM4 or you can visit our website www.snookerskills.com the video is on there also. The reason for joining this forum and telling you this is that our directors (Stephen and Jon Harrison) are currently having a Leyland Lynx single decker bus fitted out at a bus coverters in Southampton, it will be ready in 8-10 weeks, the bus will travel round Sheffield and surrounding areas taking snooker to areas and disadvantaged groups in conjunction with the local council and police etc. It will have a snooker table on board and be snooker themed. It will no doubt fall on my lap to ensure that the bus is street legal and any repair and maintainance issues will also be left to me. Any help the members of this forum can give will be greatfully recieved, from legal issues to day to day running. Thanks in anticipation.

Hello. I am not located in Britain, sorry. Hope that does not rule me out... I am in Australia, in the island state of Tasmania, and I am a bus driver for a company that runs about 20 buses on school, charter, and general passenger access runs. Most of the time I am on a school run with charter work during the day.
I am also in a bus preservation society, and we like to see buses preserved in original condition, however I also like a good conversion...and I hope to do one of my own at some point. Buses here are getting seriously cheap, due to government subsidies for operators to upgrade to newer equipment and a diminishing rate of fees on government school contracts as the bus gets older, to the point where a 20 year old bus is not economical to operate as a school bus. That means loads of 20 year old buses going cheap, and many getting scrapped.
My daily drive is a 1993 Mercedes OH1418 57 seat 12.5 metre coach, 5 speed manual and air suspension. Underpowered but I love it! We have everything from Leyland Tigers, Mercedes O305s, Volvo B6 etc right up to brand new Mercedes OH1830s and a new Iveco.

Hi All, My name is Mick (you guessed eh!) and I have nurtured the idea of a conversion for a long time and have even viewed a few vehicles over the years Time is is getting shorter, for no other reason than age and I have at last decided to"go for it"but it it would appear that I am encountering a common problem namely Insurance, I need cover to move the vehicle from the seller to me whilst it is still technically a bus,(unless I buy from someone willing to deliver) and obviously cover once converted.
I cannot remember how many Company's and/or brokers I have tried all to no avail but I thought that I had "cracked it" on reading about Adrian Flux, whom I contacted via e-mail yesterday they got back to me with an automatic response saying someone would be in touch........... I read on here this morning on finding the site that they are no longer taking on this type of business ( apologies to whoever posted this info I have not taken note of your name) where I wonder does that leave me/us. HELP! Seriously though who covers you? Best Regards, Mick.

Hello folks.
I'm new around here and am about to embark on the conversion of an old bus. I will back with details of my conversion when it gets under way, which will be as soon as I find somewhere I can work on her.

Hello, I'm new to this forum, and I'm an expat living in California. Two years ago I bought a Crown Supercoach II that I'm starting to convert - here's a picture of Ventura USD's no.63, just like mine: www.flickr.com/photos/southerncalifornian/247439591/ It's a 40-foot school bus made in 1990 by the legendary Crown company of Los Angeles, and it has a two-stroke Detroit 6V92TA (with Jake brake) in the back driving through an Allison HT740 automatic transmission - its driveline is basically the same as an MC9 Greyhound bus, certainly not like your typical school bus! It can do 67 MPH, but I prefer to cruise at 60 to get better fuel economy. Everything on it is very heavy-duty, using parts from Class-8 trucks (the big ones that run 80,000 lbs or more), so I hope it should be reliable for many years to come. I chose a school bus instead of a Greyhound or tour coach because all school buses in California have to pass a rigorous CHP inspection every year; my bus's CHP certification was current until I bought it. It has only 275,000 miles on it, compared with two million miles or more for a typical ex-Hound, and any MCI I could afford would be at the end of its useful life. I also like having a separate full frame running its full length, and this will make it easier to attach a heavy-duty tow hitch at the back for a toad (I already have a 2" receiver hitch at the front!). My first job was to make a spare wheel mount under the nose, complete with winch and dolly. I then made a slide-out mount for my generator that sits between the door and front wheel. To provide on-board air for running air tools and inflating tires (oops, tyres) I've put a small 2HP air compressor in the luggage bay, and this feeds air outlets around the bus. My present project is installing the two fresh water tanks: each tank holds 110 gallons, and they are slung either side of the fuel tank immediately behind the front axle. When they're finished I will make a place for the water pumps, pressure accumulator, filters, valves and cold water distribution manifold. There will be a 115 gal gray tank and a 65 gal black tank, space for up to eight golfcart batteries for house power, and a slide-out for two 30 lb propane cylinders. I eventually want to cover the roof with as many PV solar panels as I can afford, ideally at least 1000 watts, and this should make me self-sufficient for all my electrical demands without always needing shore hookups. Sunshine is a year-round resource here, so I will have free electricity and water heating most of the time. Once all the support systems are in place underneath I'll start on the interior. It will have a big bedroom in the back, two closets, a bathroom (that's American-speak for the loo) on the left side, a shower on the right side, a kitchen on both sides, an office/dining table, then a big living room in the front. There should be plenty of space for everything, and all my underfloor luggage bay will still be available for Other Stuff. I plan on using a chest freezer with an external thermostat as a super-efficient fridge, then it can run off the PV panels. For cooling I'm thinking about using simple evaporative coolers - they work well in our dry climate here, and they use far less power than air conditioning so again I should be able to run them off the PV panels. My girlfriend ruefully calls my bus The Mistress, because she says I spend more time with her than with her. When I repaint her (the bus, not my GF) I may just put this name on the front. Best wishes from Southern California, where we're all shivering and miserable because it was only 65 F today! Darn, winters are tough here! John
