On my tacho there is a small warning triangle at the bottom of the dial with a red lcd. The lcd is constantly illuminated. I have asked a few drivers what this indicates and had various answers including: no card fitted - exceeding speed limit - speed warning light, all of which are incorrect as there is a card fitted and the lcd is illuminated permanently. I know I do not require a tacho in the UK but I do not want to just cut a cable somewhere to cure it as it may result in a more serious problem. Any ideas?? All the best, Jim Anderson - Edinburgh

Hi Jim. I am also in Edinburgh, we should get together some time The tacho is needed as your speedo, if you don't have a separate speedo. They usually have a red light which lights up when you go above 50mph. If you do not have a tacho disk inserted there are plastic disks which should be used to protect the needles. I have spoken to the various authorities and there is no requirement for using tachos to record driving hours in the UK, I have heard of some requirements overseas. The clock on the tachograph can be adjusted by opening the unit, there should be a white wheel on the back at the side of the face. Not the centre spindle. The clock should be working. The warning light may indicate that there is a fault with the unit. Provided the speedo reflects your road speed then there should not be a problem in the UK.

Hi Jonathan, Thanks for the reply - I am thinking it could be a fault in the unit as the speed indicated is fairly accurate (I hope). The fault appeared a couple of weeks ago but the speedo side seemed to be okay when I took it for a spin round the outskirts of town last weekend, including a pedal to the metal on the by-pass. I haven't seen your Red Dragon in the town yet but I will keep an eye out for it. Your idea for a conversion meet-up sounds good, I will keep my eyes open for further details - perhaps a weekend somewhere would be suitable as we all probably have different holiday periods. Still trying to sort out the site ring thingy, the site manager doesn't seem to have the bits you mentioned in your email. Going there right now to have another go at it. All the best, Jim Anderson

Just found out that the warning triangle with the red LED is there to indicate a number of likely faults with the type of unit fitted in George. One of the most common faults highlighted is the locking mechanism which wears with use as time goes by (I know the feeling). Apparantly there is a micro switch which is operated by the key when you open and close the unit to insert or remove a card. An old remedy was to bend up the locking plate to make better contact with the switch. As it is still dark pretty early these days I will leave this one for the weekend and have a go in daylight (as if I don't have enough jobs to complete already) - result to follow.

Hi - I am a new person to this forum, I have a couple of preserved buses (preserved, not campers), and found your legal section via Google.
The red light on the tacho (depending on the make - what model is it - should be a sticker inside) _should_ light up to indicate when you get to 50 then go out when you go below.
The light also goes on whenever the head is opened, and sometimes stays on if its not been closed correctly.
Do you have a tachograph key?
One final word re tachographs - as people probably know, CPCs are coming to PCV/LGV licences, and it is unclear at present what exemptions if any there will be (does this board have a thread about this)?
If exemptions are offered, one may have to prove that they have experience of driving big vehicles - a pile of correctly filled-in tachographs would be ideal proof!
Cheers James
