Hello there and it's in at the deep end of bus ownership for the Pwincess and the Coin Collector... some background... we have a month to get our 1987 Dodge 50 5.6t bus ready to live in, before we get thrown out of our current accommodation it had some conversion done, but we needed to insulate it, floor and walls, so all the interior had to come out. It's taken nearly a week, but we've nearly taken everything out now. The plan was to do the insulation this week, but... when we exposed the wheelarches inside, we noticed one was straight, but the other drooped away towards the sidewall, and looking under, a couple of the cross members that sit on top of the main steel chassis beams have cracked. It's 65mm x 35mm x 4mm thick box section steel. The body is fibreglass, and the floor is plywood. A friend has offered to help with the welding if we can get hold of the steel. We are not the most practical people - in fact we've learned more about practical stuff in the last week of stripping out the bus than we have in 40+ years each on the planet. How frightened should we be by the discovery of these cracked crossmembers? assume we know nothing, because we don't, and assume that anything anyone has to say about any stage of this project is going to be useful. We'd be delighted to read any contribution... thanks Declan & Suze the Pwincess and the Coin Collector

We've got to the stage where the final floor covering is needing to be decided upon. So far we've cut the old floor out, red-leaded the chassis, put new 18mm Exterior grade ply with a lick of yacht varnish on the underside down, inch thick Celotex between battens on top, and have just ordered the final layer of 18mm ply. While we were doing the yacht varnish, we realised that the varnished ply looked really quite nice, and started considering it for the final finish on the floor.
Our question is thus: has anyone used varnished ply as the final floor in their conversion? Does it look OK after a few years, and do you have to put tons of coats on? Do you get splinters in your feet? Can you keep it clean? Durability?
It's that or vinyl, you see...
