I have recently had fun getting insurance quotes and thought I'd share some of it with you. I joined the caravan and camping club, their blurb said they would be able to provide insurance and at a reasonable rate for any member's motorhome. All was going fine until i said it was a converted coach. "Oh no I dont think we can quote for that", " but your blurb says...." I replied. "ok then £1860" they came back, " I'll get back to you" I said. several million phone calls later I got a quote as a preserved bus for just under £200 which will do for now. when the conversion is done the best quote so far is £860. does anyone else have insurance experiences or information? G+L

CIS the CO OP will happily cover a converted bus, my bus fully comp with full european cover is about £400 per year.
I used a preserved bus policy for a year when the bus was "a bus" but they would not cover a conversion. Be careful if you modify your vehicle in any way your policy may be invalidated.

I tried the co-op they nearly had a fit. did you get a specialist department? at Adrian flux they first declined and then on a second call to a special dept they had no problem.

Strange?
I'm not sure, I phoned via the car insurance number. I know a few other people who have their motorhome/bus/coach type vehicle covered with CIS?

yeah i have friends who have insurance through them and whilst i didnt go into details for obvious reasons they said if that were the case they had probably lied or not been totally honest when setting up their policy and could find their insurance is invalid. thats the thing about insurers they will take your money then use any excuse not to pay up so in my hunt i have been totally honest with every company tried to get motorhome cover from. the only serious quote is the one i mention above they know it's a coach (at the moment), have a few conditions, fixed bed, fire extinguisher, alarm/immobiliser and furthermore they want a few photo's inside and out. they will allow me 6 months to complete the conversion. obviousley using the preserved bus policy for a couple of months is cheaper . I will try co-op again though and welcome any other suggestions

What a minefield this subject can be. Back in August last year (2004) I must have tried every single "specialist" insurer (including CIS) to get a quote, the second they knew it was a coach conversion they either fobbed me off with legal ramblings or gave me some ridiculous quote for sums in excess of £1000. In the end I contacted my car insurance company (Kwik Fit) who passed me on to their partner company - would you believe it - Adrian Flux. Having explained all to them (was getting really fed-up with the saga myself by this time) they gave me a provisional quote of £395.70 for a year fully comp' subject to receipt of my application and a photocopy of my driving licence. Jeez, I nearly fell through the floor - I was willing to go up to £500 - £550 before the tears would set in. After a couple of days all the paperwork was duly completed and returned and I got my cover note in time to get us on the road for our first holiday in George - a tour of the Highlands. Well...Aberdeen, Inverness and Glen Nevis / Fort William. By the time we got back the policy was sitting waiting for us. Apart from no new vehicle replacement, carrying a fire extinguisher (common sense really) and limited to 4500 miles per year, the policy is the same as any other and we think it's a good deal. I can't sing Adrian Flux's praises high enough - mind you I haven't made a claim yet

I renewed my policy with CIS this year and they are completely aware what the vehicle is, how big it is and that it has been modified.
I have been completely honest with them and they have been told every detail about the vehicle.
